Linux: 'import site' failed

Hallo beisammen,
wenn ich python aus der shell starte bekomme ich jedesmal folgende Meldung:

Dabei ist site.py eigentlich zwischen den anderen Modulen vertreten.
Was mich etwas irritiert ist dieser Auszug von 'strace python':

Es folgen noch etliche "(No such file or directory)", was auch nicht weiter wundert, denn '/opt/Python-2.4.2/lib/python24.zip' gibt es nicht und gab es auch nicht. Die sourcen wurden frisch von python.org runtergeladen und ganz normal mit './configure' , 'make' , 'make install' kompiliert und installiert....
Hat evtl. einer eine Idee??

Das hatte ich übersehen und das riecht doch ganz stark danach, als hätte es damit zu tun.... ich google mal...

Hat sich erledigt.... ich hatte von einer vorigen Installation noch eine alte PYTHONHOME Umgebungsvariable rumgeistern
